Press release Duvenbeck
Bocholt, 7 June 2023 - The freight forwarding and logistics company Duvenbeck is testing the use of photovoltaics for the power supply of commercial vehicles together with the BMW Group. An ultra-thin solar mat from the solar technology provider "TRAILAR" was installed on the top of each of two truck trailers. The solar power generated by the photocells flows into the tractors' car battery and supplies electricity to run the alternator, which powers the on-board electrical systems. Thanks to the solar power, the alternator requires less fuel to generate electricity, which also results in a reduction of climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO2). In addition, the feed-in of solar power relieves the vehicle battery and the service life of the battery is extended. Via a web-based platform, the data transmitted telematically by "TRAILAR" on the amount of electricity generated by the solar mats can be retrieved.
The test vehicles are two vehicle combinations with low-deck trailers and different drive technologies from the truck manufacturer IVECO. One is powered conventionally with diesel fuel, the other with liquefied natural gas (LNG). Duvenbeck uses both vehicle combinations for the just-in-time supply of the BMW Group. They operate daily on the identical long-distance route between the BMW engine plant in Steyr (Austria) and the BMW production site in Regensburg (Germany).
"As a logistics partner of the automotive industry that is open to technology, we share responsibility for achieving the climate targets. Therefore, it was no question for us that we support the BMW Group's initiative to keep the transport emissions of the entire supply chain of construction components as low as possible," explains Bernd Reining, fleet manager at Duvenbeck. In addition, Reining says, the test results could provide an incentive to equip more vehicles with solar mats.
Duvenbeck's fleet includes 1,500 combinations consisting of tractor and trailer, 3,500 trailers and 1,000 swap bodies. They are mainly used for automotive customers.
